Historical Informed Interpretation

Tomas Cotik was first inspired to learn more about period-performance during his undergraduate years by Baroque musicians such as Robert Hill, the Freiburger Barockorchester, Anton Steg, and Jeanne Lamon. Through years of study and experimentation with Baroque set-ups, Cotik has now brought Historically-Informed Performances (HIP) to the forefront of his career. As a complement to his Centaur Records 2-CD SET of Bach’s Six Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin and Telemann’s 12 Fanstasias, Cotik wrote a 10-article series on Bach performance praxis that was published online by The Strad Magazine. A unique and distinctive aspect of his Bach recording was to record the album with a Baroque bow (while still using a modern violin and modern standard pitch). Cotik´s series of articles on Bach interpretation as well as his doctoral dissertation on Schubert´s aspects of interpretation explore his inspiration and pursuit of lifelong learning.
